Meaning of Dogfish Headdress:
This limited edition block print by Haida artist Danielle Louise Allarddraws inspiration from the carving of a Dogfish Headdress made by Haida artist Corey Bulpitt (See photos in the product listing). Dogfish is a supernatural being in Haida culture, and a headdress was typically worn by a high ranking person, reminding them of their responsibilities to the land, people, and the supernaturals.
"The story of the Dogfish Mother tells of a woman who was carried off by a Dogfish and was transformed into a shark herself. She is depicted having a face with a hooked nose and gills. She became an ancestress of the families who now claim the Shark as their crest. The dogfish is a common type of shark, so the dogfish mother is a larger shark, a blue shark or great white." - Haida artist, Corey Bulpitt
