Design: This is a replica of the halibut hooks historically used by the Haida. This piece can be hung on a wall or displayed on a stand.

Yew wood is a strong wood that is indigenous to Haida Gwaii and is found in small quantities. Traditionally yew wood was used for hooks, paddles, armour and other tools because of its dense and strong properties.

Made by Haida Artist, Gene Davidson Senior:

Gene Davidson Senior is a Haida artist from Old Massett on Haida Gwaii. He is well known for his creation of traditional halibut hooks using local and exotic wood. His halibut hooks are made according to the traditional Haida way. Gene created many authentic Haida tools, including halibut hooks for the full length film, “Edge of the Knife (Sgaawaay K’uuna)”.
