As winter sets in the days are getting colder and darker. For many people, winter is a wonderful time of year because they get to enjoy the holiday season. For others, these dark, short days might have you feeling like you never want to leave your home. During these darker days, if you find yourself feeling more moody than usual and you feel like you are losing your motivation and energy, then you may have Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).
Seasonal Affective Disorder is a type of depression that can affect people when the seasons change and the amount of sunlight decreases or increases. It can occur with any change of season, but usually affects most people through the fall and winter. It is common in people who live in places where the seasons changes faster than usual and in places which are far north or far south of the equator, a place such as Haida Gwaii.
According to Mayo Clinic, some side effects of SAD are:
-
Feeling depressed most of the day, nearly every day
-
Losing interest in activities you once enjoyed
-
Having low energy
-
Having problems sleeping
-
Experiencing changes in your appetite or weight
-
Feeling sluggish or agitated
If you think you may be affected by SAD, you should consult your doctor for diagnosis. To deal with the symptoms of SAD, the Mayo Clinic notes some of the following remedies: light therapy, getting outside regularly, and exercise.
In addition to these tools, we recommend three crystals that can specifically help you deal with the side effects caused by SAD.
Quartz Crystal, Black Tourmaline, and Bloodstone are the best crystals to use to get past the winter blues. For those who are not diagnosed with SAD, but feel less energetic on darker days, these crystals can help you too!
With reference to knowledge passed down to us from our parents, other teachers who studied crystal healing, and research from Melody’s book “Love is in the Earth”, we’ve put together some info about how each of the following crystals can help.
Quartz Crystal
Known as the ultimate healing stone, Quartz Crystal is perfect for curing those winter blues.Quartz Crystal is a powerful stone and has been used across cultures for healing and helping one to recognize the origin of a disease. Quartz Crystal works by clearing and re-activating the energy centers of the body which may feel stuck. This crystal promotes energy flow, which in turn helps to reinvigorate your body and mind.
Simply by its presence on your body or in your physical space, Quartz Crystal acts as a physical and mental energizer. Carry a single Quartz Crystal in your pocket or place in your environment to maintain balance, energy, and protection. Wearing Quartz Crystal as jewelry is another great way to introduce this crystal into your life. According to Melody, wearing Quartz Crystal earrings is especially beneficial in achieving balancing, grounding of your physical body, and alignment of all chakras. During a meditative state, use tumbled Quartz Crystal at the area of the third-eye chakra (forehead) or temples to empty your mind of unwanted thoughts. Doing this will help you to focus more clearly.
When using a Quartz Crystal with one termination (crystal point), the orientation of the crystal is less important, as these crystals are powerful in all shapes and forms. However, Melody says that having the point of the crystal facing down while wearing it will help one feel more attuned and grounded to the world.
For further amplifying the healing qualities of Quartz Crystal, seek a double terminated Quartz Crystal (crystal point on both ends), as they allow for energy to flow from either side of the stone.
Black Tourmaline
Black Tourmaline is known as a stone which provides security and protection. Darker days can bring on feelings of darkness within the mind, blocking our ability to access light. Using Black Tourmaline helps us to combat these darker feelings and energy drains by creating a shield of protection. This stone repels and blocks dark and negative energy within a person, space, or property. The strong protective properties of Black Tourmaline allows us to stay in the light and maintain our spirits in hard times or times of despair.
Black Tourmaline is also a ground stone and can increase your physical vitality and emotional stability. By using this stone to activate the first chakra and visualize your connection to center of the earth, black tourmaline can enhance one’s well-being in the physical world.
Black Tourmaline can also be used as an aid to remove fear, boost self-confidence, and has a calming effect when needed (Healing Crystals).
Bloodstone
Bloodstone, which is dark green with red speckles, is another form of quartz which can help you through dark times. It is an intense healing stone and a “stone of courage”. It provides one with the centering and grounding energy of the heart and is conducive to balancing the total body in order to help one overcome any distress and anxiety which is associated with the re-alignment of energies.
The message that lies within the Bloodstone is “be here now”, emphasizing the importance of one to remain present and grounded in their day-to-day life. It grants one the mastery of renewal: renewal of the physical, mental, and emotional. It also provides for the revitalization of love, relationships, and friendships. It can be used to dispel states of bewilderment and obscure thought.
How do I use these Crystals?
These Crystals can be used in many ways. To start using Crystals, we recommend putting Crystals in your sacred space, such as the entrance to your home, bedroom, or vehicle, or you can incorporate the Crystals into your regular meditation and intention-making, or simply wear as jewelry.
