Haida artist Garner Moody was born in Prince Rupert, British Columbia and was raised in Skidegate on Haida Gwaii. He is the nephew of prolific argillite carver, Rufus Moody. Garner was artistic as a child and he remembers drawing from age 9 onwards. He carved his first piece of argillite when he was 15. Garner moved to Vancouver in 1987, and was invited to help renowned Haida artist, Bill Reid carve a full-scale Lootaas cedar dugout canoe. While he was in Vancouver, Garner leaned a great deal about Haida design and argillite carving from Haida artists Nelson Cross, Alfie Collinson, Ron Wilson, and Clayton Gladstone. Garner currently lives on Haida Gwaii, and focuses on argillite, gold jewellery, and carving in red and yellow cedar.
