Earring Design: These sterling silver clamshell earrings, accented with diamonds and dentalium shells, carry deep significance. The elements and design of these earrings, inspired by the artist's "Royal Portrait" exhibition and her work exploring themes of matriarchy, highlight Northwest Coast cultures' understanding of royalty — one rooted in responsibility, caretaking, and connection to the land.
Clamshells represent the responsibilities of high-ranking women, while dentalium shells harvested from sea mollusks were traditionally used as currency along the Northwest Coast, symbolizing wealth and prosperity.
"Clam beds are something that we traditionally cultivated and harvested. Often high-ranking northwest coast women would be the one tending them, and dentalium is a pre-contact form of currency as well."- Ts'msyen artist Morgan Asoyuf.
