3 Ways To Display A Northwest Coast Paddle At Home

A Northwest Coast Paddle on display

3 Ideas for Welcoming This Unique Art Form Into Your Space

Have you always dreamed of owning a paddle from Haida Gwaii, but are wondering, “Where should I display it? And how?” With paddles being in nearly every home on Haida Gwaii, we’re here to help you get started. Here are 3 ways to display this coastal art form to your home:

1. Install the Paddle Vertically: Floating From the Ceiling

This style is surprisingly easy. You take an eye hook and screw it into the ceiling, placing it about 3-4 inches away from the wall. Then cut a piece of clear fishing line and create a loop by threading it through the eye hook and tie the fishing line securely.

Next, take the handle of the paddle and carefully slide it through the loop of fishing line. The paddle hangs freely, with the handle secured by the fishing line. This simple technique adds depth to your display but also creates the illusion that the paddle is floating. It’s a unique and subtle way to showcase your Haida Gwaii paddle.

2. Installing Your Paddle Horizontally: Centre with Objects Below

Find an area of your home where there is space to display the paddle horizontally. This could be above a window, door frame, or library. Then measure the length of your paddle and centre the paddle lengthwise in relationship to that item. To secure the paddle, use fishing line, knotting the line close to the paddle to secure, one on the right and left sides. Then attach the line to the wall using two picture framing hooks. You can also make or purchase leather or fabric strips to create a fastener for each side of the paddle and secure to the wall with hanging hardware.

3. Rest Against a Wall: Great for Corners

Sometimes, simplicity is key. Just place the handle of your paddle on the floor and lean the top gently against the wall or in a corner. To make it even more eye-catching, style the surrounding space with complementary decor that enhances the paddle’s beauty and tells a story. Here we added a glass ball, connecting the paddle back to its use in the ocean. This compliments smaller spaces as well, like entryways or any corner that could use a touch of coastal aesthetic.
