About the Artist  

Marcel Russ was born and raised in Old Massett, Haida Gwaii and is from the Raven Clan of the Haida Nation. Major influences in his life have been the culture, lifestyle and the values of his people.

Being raised with the influences of native heritage helped to shape his unique world view, values and beliefs. Artisans who influenced him from an early age include his late grandfather (Chief Reynold Russ), his father Ron Russ (master carver of argillite and wood) and his uncle Chris Russ (also a Haida artist).

The Russ family are well-known argillite carvers of the Haida Nation and have been featured in many museums and galleries, as well documented in native art book collections. In addition to design, Marcel likes to carve intricate designs of argillite, gold, silver and wood. 

Marcel’s art always encompasses a story. Consider yourself fortunate to own a piece of his work!
