Acrylic paint on red cedar paddle with New Zealand abalone inlay." - Haida Artist, Billy Yovanovich

The Wasgo is a supernatural creature from Haida oral history, a formidable blend of wolf and killer whale that symbolizes both earth and water. In Haida oral traditions, it is said to inhabit Spirit Lake behind Skidegate. Renowned as a skilled hunter, the Wasgo is reputed to possess the extraordinary ability to capture three whales simultaneously.

This paddle, hand-carved and painted by Billy Yovanovich, showcases his dedication to both artistry and functionality. By crafting his own paddles, Billy selects the ideal canvas while ensuring each piece remains functional.

The exceptional craftsmanship of this paddle is highlighted by the intricate abalone inlay, which brings the Wasgo to life with its vivid eyes that shine in the light. Billy set out to challenge himself and push the boundaries of his skill with this piece, and the result is a stunning demonstration of his artistic achievement and creativity.
